Leading Your Self-Image

A major aspect of leading yourself in ministry is leading your self-image. Self-image can make or break your leadership. Perhaps you have found yourself in a place where you miss opportunities as you worry about whether you are good enough. Maybe you battle insecurity as you preach. A lot of times, half of the battle of being a pastor is your own self-image. God called you for a reason and He has equipped you for the job. It is up to you whether or not you will align yourself with this reality. We understand this is easier said than done, so we want to help you.

Oftentimes your self-image can lead you to dark places. It is tempting to let your mind wander about all the possible things you could mess up in ministry. You could spend all day contemplating certain reasons as to why you aren’t good enough. You could give into your negative thinking, but this would leave you in no position to pastor. You can’t pour into others if you are empty. A lot of times, negative feelings toward yourself and negative self-talk can lead you to an empty place.

On the other hand, your self-image may become inflated to the point at which you feel too good for ministry. This is the point where you view yourself too positively. Thoughts begin to arise such as “what would this church do without me,” or “if I left, this church would fall apart.” Pride has no place in the ministry that God has for you. When we let go and give all the glory to God, he will guide you into a healthy self-image.

We believe there are some practical steps you can take to achieve a healthy self-image in ministry. What are these practical steps? What does a healthy self-image look like?
