We also discussed the volunteer onboarding process and how to recruit more volunteers. In addition, we examined the ways to help volunteers serve on mission, and the importance of generating enthusiasm. In this final video, we investigate the ways to increase a volunteer’s capacity. Getting volunteers to serve more can be tricky, but with intentionality, there is hope for this effort.

“Capacity” is one of the most prominent leadership topics today. This is such an intriguing topic because it supposes that everyone has room to increase capacity, but that few of us ever comes close to doing so. Similarly, when someone states that they have done as much as they possibly can, it is likely not so.

Concerning church volunteers, there should be a positive correlation between someone growing as a Christ-follower and simultaneously growing their capacity to contribute in a greater way. Enthusiastic leaders in the church generally want to contribute in the most meaningful way they can. That’s why fit is so important. When a volunteer feels like their effort matches their giftedness, they are likely to persist longer as a church volunteer. Even though many volunteers may begin with a smaller task, it is your job as a leader to assess progress and keep capacity growing. You may nudge a volunteer farther than they dreamed possible by encouraging them to accept minor risks in new volunteer territory.
