Within any form of leadership, motivation plays a key role. Previously, in our Leaders.Church content, we have unpacked the difference between motivation and manipulation. Manipulation involves coercion and oftentimes deception to get what you want, whereas motivation is a healthy tool to push others toward their potential. When you adopt a positive motivation strategy for missions giving, you will not only see more giving, but more excitement surrounding the idea of generosity from your congregation.
Motivation is about effective communication. As a pastor or church leader, if you want to inspire your congregation to get behind any initiative or mindset, communication is key. When it comes to a topic such as giving, motivation is fundamentally important. As you know, money is limited and are reluctant to give unless they have a good reason to. As a pastor, you know the biblical principles of generosity and why generosity is a cornerstone of the Church, but your congregation may not know these things. So, what type of communication do you need to pursue to motivate toward missions giving?
Additionally, aside from communication, there are certain facets of motivating missions giving that have to do with the leader’s actions. This could look different for different church contexts, but generally speaking, there are a few things you must do as a leader to inspire missions giving at your church. What are these things and how can you pursue them? What does good leadership look like in terms of missions giving? What does the pastor need to understand in terms of missions giving?
