What Is Grace?
Is it something I earn, I deserve, I can conjure up by some magic of my own?
Is grace really liberating or are there a few conditions?
Can I really comprehend a grace without condition?
Probably most of us, if we’re honest, feel like we sometimes don’t quite measure up to what we should be for God.
We give attention to the commands of scripture, really want to do it right and certainly want to be obedient to the Lord. And on a bunch of occasions we hit the mark right on!
However, there are other times, when we miss. Our intentions were right – most of the time – but we just don’t ALWAYS measure up. And when that happens, we’re sure grace probably won’t apply for us.
Pastor John Lindell of James River Church in Springfield, Missouri has just released an outstanding new book on grace, Soul Set Free. In it he articulates why grace is more liberating than we can believe.
A Grace Without Condition?
Lots of us in Christian circles know that grace covers it all, but we have that sneaking suspicion that there probably are some places where our failures are not measuring up, and that exempts God from extending grace to us. We just don’t deserve it.
Of course, we don’t deserve it. Grace is unmerited. “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not of your own doing; it is the gift of God.” Ephesians 2:8
Further, sometimes we can feel like grace is good and right for God to give to us, but He probably has a few conditions on that grace. Note to all of us… grace with conditions is no grace at all.
A centerpiece of the Apostle Paul’s writing to the Romans is grace. Pastor John writes about that grace in a way that the reader can understand the beauty and simplicity of it all.
He covers things like rules-based Christianity, the frustration of trying to please God on your own, what it means to truly be dead to sin and how in life we can really be more than conquerors.
I’ve read the book and highly recommend it. Pick it up, read it and believe that you can truly have a Soul Set Free – a grace without condition!
