Growing Disciples Organically

I find it interesting that the subtitle of Don Detrick’s new book, Growing Disciples Organically, is The Jesus Method of Spiritual Formation.  I don’t know how many books I’ve read over the years that point church leaders and laity to various and sundry aspects of discipleship. A bunch of them for sure.  Now there’s another book, but this one’s different.

You would think with Jesus as our model discipleship  would  be simple. So why is it we struggle to do it well?

In his foreword to Detrick’s book, Les Welk makes the statement “If you were to gather Christian leaders from across America, or even the world, and allow them to engage in a free-wheeling discussion on issues of greatest concern to them in ministry, the topic would inevitably turn to discipleship. Leaders are challenged by the task.”

In this book, Detrick uses his background as a farm kid growing all sorts of fruits and vegetables to draw multiple parallels to growing disciples … organically. He does a masterful job taking first-century stories told by Jesus and translating them into the 21st century.

The author systematically walks the reader through the stages of discipleship starting with an examination of how we got to the place we have found ourselves. He sets the stage in part one of the book by framing the picture—what organic spiritual formation looks like and what it does not. He then moves us through parts two through four in laying out the elements of faith, life and community in the development of disciples.

Growing Disciples Organically is an outstanding book every church leader should read and re-read. If you are serious about spiritually growing people for the long haul, this book is for you.
